First use inspection
Stagecoach is one of the UK’s largest bus operators, enabling around 2.5 million customer journeys every day and playing a vital role in communities nationwide.
The brief
We were briefed to produce a series of national learning and development films to support the rollout of new first use inspection safety requirements.
The films needed to clearly explain the updated legal responsibilities and demonstrate how to use the newly introduced vehicle defect card, ensuring consistency and confidence across a large, dispersed workforce.
This was not about box‑ticking. It was about helping colleagues understand why the process matters and how to apply it correctly in day‑to‑day operations.
Our approach
Working closely with Stagecoach’s Operations team, we shaped the content into five structured learning and development modules, each designed to be clear, practical and easy to follow.
We recommended a presenter‑led format, featuring two Stagecoach bus drivers to guide viewers through the inspection process. This peer‑to‑peer approach grounded the training in real experience, reinforcing credibility and encouraging engagement.
Filmed over two days at the Thanet depot in Kent, the films introduce the legal framework for daily vehicle inspections before moving into detailed demonstrations of both external and internal checks. Our focus throughout was clarity, pace and consistency, ensuring the content could be confidently re‑used at scale.
The outcome
The films form a core part of Stagecoach’s national training programme. Distributed via Stagecoach’s internal communications platform, Blink, the modules support the training of 23,000 colleagues across the UK.
The films provide a reliable, repeatable resource that helps standardise safety practices while respecting the knowledge and professionalism of the people carrying them out.
The result is training content that feels practical, human and purposeful, rather than instructional for instruction’s sake.
